TOP STORIES

Bahrain said on Wednesday a bomb attack on a police bus which killed an officer and wounded nine last month was carried out by a militant cell trained by its arch-foe Iran.

France said on Wednesday it wanted an "uncompromising" dialogue with Iran about its ballistic missile program and a possible negotiation over the issue separate from Tehran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. Paris has already suggested that new European sanctions against Iran could be discussed over its missile tests, something EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini seemed to dismiss on Tuesday, keen not to raise risks to the hard-won deal that curbed Iran's disputed nuclear activity.

Britain is preparing to transfer over 400 million pounds ($527 million) to Iran as it seeks the release of a jailed Iranian-British aid worker, The Telegraph newspaper reported, citing unidentified British sources... Britain has sought legal advice over whether it could transfer the funds which it owes as a result of a disputed arms deal in the 1970s.

UANI IN THE NEWS

The Trump administration's decision, though unpopular with those in Europe seeking to do business with Iran, was a necessary step toward curbing a regime that fails to comply with the letter and the spirit of the JCPOA. Furthermore, it should serve as a reality check to businesses seeking to engage Iran, sending a clear message that doing so aids and abets the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism and risks isolation from the American market.

U.S.-IRAN RELATIONS

Iran is claiming that it has sued the United States for $60 billion in response to efforts by the American government to seize the Islamic Republic's assets as a result of terror attacks that have killed Americans and others.

SANCTIONS ENFORCEMENT

French oil and gas major Total would have to review its Iran gas project if the United States decided to impose unilateral sanctions on Tehran, given its interests in the US market, Total's chief executive told CNN.

HUMAN RIGHTS

Foreign minister Boris Johnson said Britain would appeal to Iran on humanitarian grounds to free a jailed aid worker but expressed reservations that granting her diplomatic protection would help secure her release, her husband said on Wednesday. Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a project manager with the Thomson Reuters Foundation, was sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted by an Iranian court of plotting to overthrow the clerical establishment. She denies the charges.

FOREIGN AFFAIRS

While much of the world celebrates the impending defeat of Islamic State, Israeli officials look at Syria and see little reason for joy. To them, a lesser enemy is being supplanted by a far more dangerous one-Iran and its allies. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is consolidating control, and his forces-aided by Iran and the Lebanese militia Hezbollah-are eliminating Islamic State's final pockets in the country while inching closer to the Israeli-held Golan Heights.

Egypt faces high expectations from Saudi Arabia and its other Gulf Arab benefactors that it will have their back as tensions rise with their rival Iran, including throwing the weight of its military - the largest standing Arab army - into the crisis if needed. But Egypt clearly has no desire to be dragged into a military conflict or to see the tensions spiral into another Saudi-Iran proxy battle like the many that are already tearing up the Middle East.

SYRIA CONFLICT

The official map included in a preliminary agreement that seeks to establish buffer zones in southwest Syria indicates that Iran-backed forces could deploy within several miles (kilometers) of the Israeli frontier - setting the stage for potential conflict between the bitter enemies.

Turkey, Russia and Iran will hold a summit to discuss developments in Syria next week in the Russian resort of Sochi, Turkish broadcaster NTV said on Thursday.

GULF STATES, YEMEN, AND IRAN

Without directly naming the kingdom, Iran's President Hassan Rouhani slammed Saudi Arabia for its reported role in recent developments in Lebanon.
